Missions Committee Opportunities
“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” John 20:21
The Missions Committee is committed to providing multiple opportunities for all people of BCUMC to grow in their discipleship and faith as we reach out to share the love of Christ by serving our community and the world. Join us as we put our faith in action and make connections with our many local and global projects.
The Shoeman Water Project
Help the Missions Committee bring clean water to those who thirst by cleaning out your closets and bringing your “old soles” to church on Sunday, March 4. All the children’s and adult shoes we collect will be given to the Shoeman Water Project. The Shoeman gives the shoes a second life by selling them to exporters. All the monies raised from the sale of these shoes is used to fund drilling rigs in Kenya and water purification systems in Haiti.
UMC Change the World: 2011
Change the World is a global movement of United Methodists doing what they can to improve lives and community. Churches are encouraged to create and participate in service events that make a difference either locally or globally.
In 2011 BCUMC selected The Children of the Dump in Nicaragua as our project. We were able to provide these desperately poor children 1,000 Student and Hygiene Kits. Thanks to help from Kids in Mission we were also able to provide these children 1,000 pairs of flip flops which enables them to play, work and go to school with protection from life-threatening diseases. The following was received from Bless the Children Inc. who facilitated getting our gifts to the children:
“Your love in action and your kindness will last a lifetime in the children’s hearts as you are showing them that the world is kind and that all are important, which is perhaps the greatest gift a child could receive. Together we are saving and changing lives.”
UMC Change the World Weekend – Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, 2012
A Saturday of Service is planned for May 19. This year’s Change the World theme is “Go, Be & Do” and you are encouraged to select from 15 service projects to share God’s love with our community. Not available to help on Saturday? Assistance is also needed for three other projects that contribute to the day’s success.
Starting April 15, members of the Missions Committee will be in the Courtyard every Sunday through May 13 to sign up teams for each project. You may also call or visit the Church Office to sign up.
Saturdays in Service
The Missions Committee sponsors Saturdays is Service as needed when members have been called on to help with beautification and repair projects on our church campus. On past Saturdays members have painted the quads, cleaned and painted stripes in the parking lot, weeded and added new plants to the Prayer Garden, weeded and mulched the flower beds, and made repairs to buildings.
Our goal is to add quarterly Saturdays in Service to those organizations we connect with on Change the World Saturday.
Day of “Thanks” & “Giving”
This annual event provides an opportunity for our members to not only reach out and share with less fortunate families in our community, but also to celebrate and give thanks for the many blessings we receive from our church. To date we have packed over 800 Thanksgiving food boxes with everything a family of four needs for their Thanksgiving meal.
Each year the UMM fires up their pit and provides a delicious celebration lunch for our congregation and members of all ages are provided with several “thanking” activities to do.
2012 Day of “Thanks” & “Giving” – Saturday, November, 17
Home Repair
When needed, the Mission Committee can offer a team of BCUMC members to offer assistance with minor home repairs to those who would otherwise not be able to make the necessary repairs. Some of these projects have included building wheelchair ramps; replacing siding; painting; fence repairs; yard maintenancce; and debris removal.
Angel Tree
Angel Tree is a year round ministry that gives BCUMC an opportunity to share God’s love by helping meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children with an incarcerated parent. Thanks to the continued and generous support of our members, what started as a Christmas only ministry has grown into a rewarding ongoing year-round relationship with these children and their families.
In addition to the annual Christmas party we now sponsor an Easter Breakfast & Basket Party after which the children are invited to participate in our Eggstravaganza and a Backpack Party where the children receive backpacks filled with their needed school supplies. As this ministry continues to grow, addtional activities will be planned for these families.
Kids in Mission
The Mission Committee supports the Kids in Mission by providing the monies needed for their “To Go” food sacks. When individuals come into the church office and are hungry, they are given one of the food bags that the children have packed.
Special Thanks
The Missions Committee would like to thank those who continue to financially support Missions on a regular basis; those who continue to be involved on a regular basis; and those who are able to help when they can.
